Week 5 Recap

Arizona Cardinals 3 St. Louis Rams 17

In a rather uneventful Thursday night game, the Rams were able to come away with the victory behind nine sacks from their defense on Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb. A couple of opportunities for the Cardinals to score a touchdown went by the wayside as the Rams two touchdowns came on deep bombs. As I mentioned in the first sentence, this game was uneventful.

Miami Dolphins 17 Cincinnati Bengals 13

The Dolphins came away with a shocking win in Cincinnati, but there weren't any spectacular performances in this one either. Bengals QB Andy Dalton was picked off twice, with the final interception sealing the win for the Dolphins. The Dolphins go to 2-3 with a home tilt next week against the Rams, which gives them an opportunity to get their record up to .500.

Colts WR Reggie Wayne makes a spectacular one-handed
catch.
Green Bay Packers 27 Indianapolis Colts 30

Is it time to hit the panic button for the Packers yet? The Packers were able to jump out to a 21-3 halftime lead, but only managed one score in the second half as the Colts offense were able to eat away at the Packers suspect defense. The Colts were riding high on emotions in this one, playing their first game without head coach Chuck Pagano, who is battling leukemia. Colts QB Andrew Luck showed America just what kind of quarterback he can be for years to come.

Baltimore Ravens 9 Kansas City Chiefs 6

Before the start of every season, the Ravens are always hyped as Super Bowl contenders. Going into this season, the hype was at its greatest. Ravens QB Joe Flacco was expected to take the next step, but it certainly didn't seem so in Kansas City. Completing under 50% of his passes with no touchdowns and an interception does not seem like a good quarterback at all. Doing this against a Chiefs team who hasn't done much of anything on offense or defense this year is even worse. Flacco is simply overrated.

Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw scores a touchdown in what
was a monster day.
Cleveland Browns 27 New York Giants 41

The Giants love to make Tom Coughlin's face red because he was certainly miserable in the middle of the first quarter. Down 14-0, the Giants decided to stop toying with the Browns and unleash their offense to the tune of 41 points. After going down 17-7 in the second quarter, the Giants scored 20 unanswered to take a 27-17 halftime lead and not look back. It was the case of the next man up again, as rookie WR Reuben Randle led the Giants with six catches. Star WR Victor Cruz had five catches, with three of them going for touchdowns.

Eagles QB Michael Vick loses one of his two lost fumbles.
Philadelphia Eagles 14 Pittsburgh Steelers 16

It was looking as if the Eagles would've been able to get yet another one-point victory. QB Ben Roethlisberger was not going to lose the battle of Pennsylvania. The Eagles lost a heartbreaker and it appears all fingers will be pointed at Eagles QB Michael Vick. Vick lost two fumbles, the first one being at the one-yard line with an opportunity to score. A mini quarterback controversy arised earlier this season after head coach Andy Reid made comments on Vick as his quarterback. If Vick continues to turn the ball over, will this change actually happen?

Atlanta Falcons 24 Washington Redskins 17

The hype for Redskins rookie QB Robert Griffin III certainly still exists. However, Griffin III has not won a home game for the Redskins yet, and their misery in FedEx field continues. They have lost their last eight on that field, and they lost Griffin III to a concussion as well. The Falcons didn't necessarily look overly impressive, but they were able to make the plays when they needed to. They remain undefeated, while the Redskins will wait to see if Griffin III can suit up next week against the Minnesota Vikings.

Seattle Seahawks 16 Carolina Panthers 12

Seahawks S Earl Thomas was spot on with his comments on Panthers QB Cam Newton. When things do not go well for Newton, he suffers even more. His body language is so poor at times, it has an adverse effect on the team. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson was pretty accurate, but still threw two interceptions and left the Panthers with many opportunities to win this game. It just didn't happen. The Panthers continue to suffer.

Chicago Bears 41 Jacksonville Jaguars 3

It was deja vu all over again for the Bears defense, as CB Charles Tillman and LB Lance Briggs returned interceptions for touchdowns again for the second consecutive week. That has never happened in the NFL. Meanwhile, the Jaguars looked solid in their loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1, and they got a stunning victory against the Indianapolis Colts on the road. Other than that, things have looked very bleak for this franchise. A 38-point loss at home is about as bad as it gets, as Jaguars fans continue to figure out if QB Blaine Gabbert is the future.

Tennessee Titans 7 Minnesota Vikings 30

Last year the Titans were 9-7 and had an outside chance of making the playoffs in the final game of the season. This was all with QB Matt Hasselbeck. QB Jake Locker took over the starting job this season, and it hasn't looked good for him. Locker was injured last week against the Houston Texans, and Hasselbeck took over. Whatever magic Hasselbeck had last season isn't there this year. He was not good in relief of the injured Locker last week, and was not good at all in Minnesota either. Vikings QB Christian Ponder is showing some more good signs, but he was picked off twice. Are the Vikings simply capitalizing on a easy schedule so far?

Patriots QB Tom Brady scores a touchdown on a quarterback
sneak.
Denver Broncos 21 New England Patriots 31

The media in Denver and Broncos fans will probably point this loss to RB Willis McGahee, but the Broncos simply got it going too late as Patriots QB Tom Brady beats Broncos QB Peyton Manning yet again. The game was broken open in the third quarter when the Patriots went up 31-7. However, this game resembled the last time Manning played Brady in New England, as a member of the Indianapolis Colts in 2010. The comeback was certainly possible, as the Broncos were able to recover two fumbles in the fourth quarter. However, McGahee's fumble sealed the deal.

Buffalo Bills 3 San Francisco 49ers 45

I'm not sure which occurrence should be noteworthy, but nonetheless they should both be noted. The 49ers continued their dominance in this game, a week after dominating the New York Jets on the other side of the coast. The Bills continued to be dominated, a week after giving up 45 points in the second half to the New England Patriots at home. The game was manageable at halftime, with the 49ers up 17-3. However, the floodgates opened up in the second half yet again, as the Bills gave up 28 points after intermission. 21 of the 28 points were in the fourth quarter. Last week, the Patriots scored 31 points in the fourth quarter against the Bills.

Saints QB Drew Brees sets the record for most
consecutive games with a passing TD.
San Diego Chargers 24 New Orleans Saints 31

All of the NBC Sunday night viewers were just waiting for the moment when Saints QB Drew Brees would get the touchdown pass to break Johnny Unitas' record for most consecutive games with a touchdown pass. That pass came on a 40-yard pass to WR Devery Henderson. Suspended head coach Sean Payton was in the house for the record-breaking moment, but after that, it was a football game. The Chargers were up 24-14 in the third quarter and in position to add to the Saints' misery. However, Brees led the comeback for the Saints first win of the season.

Houston Texans 23 New York Jets 17

ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer said the Jets exhausted all of the positives of their offense in this game. I would have to agree. The Jets still lost. Texans RB Arian Foster rushed for 152 yards, and the Texans were able to pick off QB Mark Sanchez twice for the close win. The questions at the quarterback position will continue in New York. QB Tim Tebow did some good things in the game, including a nice throw that was dropped by WR Jason Hill. The Jets will have a third consecutive home game next week against the Indianapolis Colts, which is looking like a must-win.
